What are Dingers?

Dingers notify you and other users about new cases as they get reported into CasePortal.

Let’s say you run a search in CasePortal to determine if there are any cases involving Apple AND Samsung, where Mintz Levin was the plaintiff law firm.

The above image illustrates a small result set for a search query with filters applied.

As shown in the image above, there are just three matching cases at the time the search was executed. But you may be interested to know about any future cases that match these same search parameters.

In this case, you will want to create a Dinger, as this will save your exact search parameters and use that information to regularly check our system for new cases that match.

How to Create a Dinger

Since Dingers alert you about future cases that match the parameters of a present day search, you can think of them as saved searches.

Accordingly, you must first execute a search before you can save it.

Please note that Limited Users cannot create Dingers. For more information about user roles and permissions, click here

Step 1: Execute a Search

Enter a query into the search input and/or use the available selectors and filters to refine your search parameters.

To create a Dinger, first execute any search, then click the “Create a Dinger” button.

Step 2: Setup the Dinger

The parameters of your search will be captured in the top section of the "Create a Dinger" form, but you'll need to complete some additional fields before you can save your dinger.

  • Dinger Name - give your Dinger a clear name so that when you receive alerts about future matches, you'll know what they relate to
  • Notification Options - if you want to be alerted every time a new case matches, select the "alert for every match" option. Otherwise you can choose to be alerted once per day with all matches, or both.
  • Billing Reference Fields - these fields are created by your firm administrator who determines if they should be required or optional. If you're unsure what to enter, please consult them. For administrators looking for information about how to create and manage billing reference fields, click here.

To setup the Dinger, you’ll have to name it, set your notification preferences, and (optionally) invite other users to receive the alerts as well.

Step 3: Add Recipients to a Dinger During Creation

Once you've completed the required fields, you can create the Dinger and manage it later, or proceed to adding recipients right away.

If you do not add recipients when you create the Dinger, you will be automatically listed as its only recipient. Dingers cannot be created without at least one recipient.

To add recipients right away to a newly created dinger, click the "Create & Add Recipients" button.

To add recipients at the time of creation, click the "Create & Add Recipients" button. This will first save the Dinger then redirect you to a screen where you can manage recipients.

To add users to a Dinger, search for and select them from the "Available Recipients" list on the left.

You can only add registered users of your office as recipients. If want to add a recipient who is not listed in the "Available Recipients" column, you must first invite them to the system. For more information on inviting users to CasePortal, click here

Why Can't I Create a Dinger?

If the "Create a Dinger" button remains disabled after you've executed a search, you may have a Limited User role. Check with your CasePortal administrator about upgrading your permissions.

How to Manage Dingers

Once your Dinger has been created, it can be viewed and managed on the Dingers page in the library relative to where you conducted your search.

If you are the creator of a Dinger, you can pause or delete the Dinger from this page.

If you are not the creator of a Dinger, but you have Office Admin or Firm Admin permissions, you can also pause or delete Dingers created by other users.

Additional actions that can be taken from the Dingers list:

  • Self-subscribe to or unsubscribe from Dinger emails

  • Self-subscribe to or unsubscribe from Dinger SMS alerts

  • View total hits for a Dinger (a “hit” is recorded every time a new match is found) and drill down to see which cases matched as well as change history to the Dinger setup

  • Manage Dinger recipients
  • Modify the Dinger setup
